Best E-poster presentation award for Associate Professor Kyoko Yoshioka-Maeda

Dr. Kyoko Yoshioka-Maeda, Associate Professor of the Department of Community Health Nursing, received a best e-poster presentation award for her presentation titled “Review on the effectiveness of virtual reality simulation-based learning for nursing students” at the 7th International Nursing Research Conference of World Academy of Nursing Science.

Dr. Yoshioka is highly interested in high-fidelity simulation and other measures that would effectively improve nursing students’ knowledge, skills, confidence, and clinical reasoning. “In nursing education, simulation education is considered a bridge between student’s knowledge and skills and is effective in gaining confidence and improving learning effectiveness,” said Dr. Yoshioka.

Dr. Yoshioka and her research colleagues noted the need for a systematic synthesis of the effectiveness of virtual reality simulation-based learning for nursing students. Therefore, they attempted to address this gap. Their reviews demonstrated the efficacy of virtual reality simulation-based learning and showed most literature focused on assessment and skill training in hospital settings. Additionally, they revealed that no literature focused on home settings.

Dr. Yoshika believes in the values and merits of interdisciplinary collaboration. “Our research group includes members from The University of Tokyo, Tokyo Metropolitan University, and AIST and is promoted through collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing and the Faculty of Engineering. We aim to develop virtual reality teaching materials and verify their effectiveness to improve the clinical reasoning skills of nursing students in home settings,” said Dr. Yoshioka.
