The association between burnout and multiple roles at work and in the family among female Japanese nurses: a cross-sectional study

Dr Ryohei Kida, PhD, RN Assistant professor in Department of Nursing Administration and Advanced Clinical Nursing

For female nurses in Japan, it is very important to operate multiple roles of work and family. Dr. Kida and colleagues examined the association between female nurses having work roles (additional work roles), family roles (child-rearing or caregiver), or both multiple roles, and their burnout. The new findings showed that nurses in the family role, even in multiple roles, had significantly lower relative burnout scores. The results suggest a positive spillover effect for nurses in the home role, or the possibility that a large number of nurses leave the workplace before they have family roles.
