Revisiting the Why of Peer Review: Sustainability of the Current System

Dr. Sameh Eltaybani, PhD, Project Senior Lecturer in Global Nursing Research Center

Peer review is a process where experts in the same field check and evaluate each other’s work to ensure its accuracy and high quality. As an associate editor, editorial board member, and peer reviewer of several journals, Dr. Sameh Eltaybani acknowledges the importance of peer review as a cornerstone of science, including nursing. Dr. Eltaybani, a Project Senior Lecturer at the Global Nursing Research Center (GNRC), wrote a letter to discuss the sustainability of the current peer-review system, highlighting the challenges in securing peer reviewers, primarily for non-novice researchers. Dr. Eltaybani questions the adequacy of current incentives for peer reviewers and suggests that financial compensation could be a practical solution. The letter also proposes Dr. Eltaybani’s suggestion to link manuscript submissions to peer-review participation as a potential solution to ensure a reciprocal process.
