Palliative and end-of-life care education in prelicensure nursing curricula: A nationwide survey in an Arab country

Dr. Sameh Eltaybani, PhD, RN Project Assistant Professor in Global Nursing Research Center

In the Arab and Islamic world, there is a scarcity of research about palliative and end-of-life care education. Dr. Eltaybani and his research colleagues conducted a cross-sectional survey to explore what palliative and end-of-life care education is given to undergraduate nurses in Egypt. The research team found that most palliative and end-of-life care topics are well covered in undergraduate nursing curricula; however, education about these topics is predominantly theoretical. This survey identified the importance of in-service training programs on palliative and end-of-life care, especially for novice nurses, to account for the variability in undergraduate education. The researchers outlined recommendations for educators and researchers to improve the quality of palliative and end-of-life care education in Egypt.
