Improving nurse staffing during a specific time shift could be an effective health policy strategy, but no previous studies have investigated the effects of increasing night-shift nurses. In this study, we investigated the effect of adopting a scheme to increase night-shift nurse staffing on patient outcomes in Japan. Using a nationwide inpatient database, we conducted a difference-in-differences analysis. We demonstrated that increasing night-shift nurses was not associated with a decrease in in-hospital mortality or failure to rescue but was associated with a reduction in the length of hospital stay.
