With a growing aging population, the number of older people receiving care in long-term care residential facilities, such as nursing homes, has been increasing. Families of those people continue to be involved in the lives of their relatives after being institutionalized. Therefore, not only institutionalized older adults need support, but their families as well. Dr. Eltaybani and his research team searched the literature to summarize the characteristics of the interventions that aim to support families of older people in long-term care residential facilities. The research team identified a wide range of interventions that could be implemented in long-term care facilities to help families of older people, such as psychotherapy and educational programs for healthcare professionals, residents, and families. The researchers found that implementing these interventions was associated with high-quality care and better resident-staff-family partnerships. The researchers outlined recommendations for clinicians and managers to benefit residents, families, and staff in long-term care residential facilities.
