Perceived Work Environment, Educational Status, Staffing Levels, and Work Outcomes in Long-Term Care Settings During COVID-19

Dr. Sameh Eltaybani, Project Lecturer in the Global Nursing Research (GNRC)

The Global Nursing Research Center (GNRC) aims to increase collaboration among nursing researchers nationally and internationally to promote the quality of healthcare services worldwide. Dr. Sameh Eltaybani and Professor Noriko Yamamoto-Mitani successfully collaborated with esteemed researchers from South Korea in a study that examined associations of long-term care facilities’ staff’s perceived work environment, educational status, and facility staffing levels with the work outcomes of care staff during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea. The study found that staff who perceived their work environment to be poor were more likely to be dissatisfied with their work, experience high burnout, intend to leave the facility within a year, and experience increased overtime work and work-life imbalance due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study provides evidence that work environments should be improved, and government-led initiatives for ensuring such improvements should be implemented to enable a better response to future public health crises and maintain the quality of care for and safety of residents in long-term care settings.
