Nursing Data Science
Dr. Haruna Kugai received a Master of Science in Health Sciences from the University of Tokyo in 2020 and completed a Ph.D. in Health Sciences at the same University in 2023. After obtaining her doctorate, she worked as an assistant professor at Kawasaki City College of Nursing and, from 2024, held a research position at the University of Tokyo, where she participated in projects related to nursing data science.
Her research interests focus on care and services for older adults with chronic conditions, particularly kidney disease, and on self-management support. She conducted a national cross-sectional survey to examine the relationship between nursing care, including patient education, and self-care among individuals undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Her recent studies utilize real-world data, such as medical and long-term care insurance claims, to generate evidence on renal care and healthcare services. She is currently a member of the Department of Nursing Data Science, a social cooperation program in partnership with the Japanese Nursing Association. The program aims to utilize existing nursing data, develop nursing-relevant databases, and foster human resource development in the field of nursing data science.
