Inadequate gestational weight gain is common in Japan and has been shown to be associated with an increase in low birth weight infants. This study surveyed 626 women in four regions and found that 52.6% had insufficient weight gain. Risk was especially high among those with low pre-pregnancy BMI and inadequate guidance from healthcare professionals. The study highlights the importance of both medical support and maternal awareness in achieving appropriate weight gain and emphasizes the need for effective guidance to help prevent low birth weight outcomes.
