Yoshiaki Kanamori, a doctoral student in the Department of Psychiatric Nursing, received the Best Presentation Award at the 23rd Japanese Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. Kanamori and co-researchers examined the association between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and unintended pregnancy in 5,409 women nationwide. Cumulative ACEs were consistently associated with unintended pregnancy, and family functioning in adulthood and having someone to seek help when needed are also found to be related factors. Taken together with the impact of pregnancy intention on subsequent maternal and child health outcomes, the study’s findings of an association between ACEs and unintended pregnancy suggest the importance of trauma-informed care in the perinatal period.
