Dr. Sameh Eltaybani, PhD, Project Senior Lecturer in Global Nursing Research Center

Promoting healthcare professionals’ retention at the workplace is essential to ensure high-quality care, particularly during global healthcare crises and in high-risk settings, such as long-term care facilities for older people. Dr. Sameh Eltaybani, a Project Senior Lecturer of the Global Nursing Research Center (GNRC), led an international study to examine social discrimination against healthcare professionals (nurses, etc.) in long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide. The study found that about 4 out of every 10 long-term care facilities’ healthcare professionals encountered at least one instance of social discrimination during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also found that psychological support could avert the negative impact of discrimination on the intention to stay, underscoring the importance of psychological support as an effective strategy to retain and support healthcare professionals during times of crisis.
