Mr. Yoshiaki Kanamori, a second-year master’s student in the Department of Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing at the University of Tokyo, received the Best Poster Award at the 26th East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars (EAFONS 2023) for his presentation titled “Factor analysis of women’s health literacy with influencing pregnancy planning and the use of infertility treatment among Japanese workers”.
This study analyzed sub-categories of health literacy that lead to women becoming pregnant at the desired time and initiating infertility treatment when pregnancy is not achieved from the HGPI online survey of working women. One of the main findings was that the odds ratios for pregnancy at the desired time and access to fertility treatment were significantly higher in the high health literacy (HL) group than in the low HL group. Another finding was the sub-categories associated with reproductive outcomes; “knowledge about the female body” was most strongly associated with pregnancy at the desired time, and “discussing sexual problems with the partner” was most strongly associated with access to infertility treatment.
“I am very honored to receive this prestigious award and so grateful to my co-authors. The results of this study suggest that adequate knowledge about sexual health and appropriate communication with one’s partner may be important for some reproductive decisions,” said Mr. Kanamori.
Mr. Kanamori aims to improve mental health in reproductive issues and conduct research on factors associated with unintended pregnancy or factors that interfere with women’s autonomy in reproductive decision-making. “Through our research, I would like to contribute to improving mental health in reproductive issues and creating a society where human rights are protected for all people,” said Mr. Kanamori.
