Gerontological Nursing/Wound Care Management
Dr. Mari Abe-Doi is an assistant professor of the department of Gerontological Nursing / Wound Care Management of UTokyo. She worked as a clinical nurse for over 10 years.
Her research field is nursing science and engineering. Specifically, she aims to develop nursing care that requires minimal pain in the infusion therapy practices that are essential to hospital treatment.
Currently, Dr. Abe-Doi is researching the safe management of peripheral intravenous catheters using ultrasounds. This includes increasing successful catheterization on the first attempt, preventing catheter failure, unplanned catheter removal due to complications, and extravasation. Ultrasound visualization, provides real-time feedback of the catheter tip position, vein condition, vein diameter, vein depth, thrombus presence, subcutaneous edema etc. Images can be obtained noninvasively, thus, Dr. Abe-Doi’s team has shown it is a safe and effective technique to reduce catheter failure. Their next step is an implementation study in a clinical setting.
